We’ve broken ground!

Fantastic work by the lovely people at @nomoredigging @nmdsoutheast installing the screw pile foundations to ensure no trees are harmed in the making of this art studio! And thanks to @canopyconsultancy for their TPO oversight!

Ground screws offer an approach to building that has a minimal impact on the land by protecting tree roots in the ground and their canopies above, along with all kinds of life in the earth. They are a sustainable alternative to concrete foundations and contain less than 50% of the embodied carbon (CO2e) than an equivalent concrete base.

They were our prefered (and only) option because of our tree protection order, hard-to-access location, and tiered garden with sloping ground. And of course, we want the studio to live in harmony with the land and life that surrounds it—from the larger trees to the microorganisms living in the soil.

This first step was done by the professionals… From here on, it’s up to us!
