The plinth

The garden growing and so is Perch! We love spending time in the garden as we build. So much life is happening there when we’re not around to witness it. And now we’re catching a glimpse: from a foraging wood mouse to a supervisory visit from a fox; tiny chirping wrens to parakeets dropping goat willow catkins on us as we work; the constant movement of butterflies and bees, ladybirds and spiders. And the trees and plants and “weeds” create their own presence in the space. I love being immersed in the green and the sounds and the warming weather, and the build means we spend entire days out here — not something we’d normally do. (Can we build a glass studio? I’ll miss this open-air 360 view…am tempted to stop at building the floor and spending my days in the open air!) 😊

We’ve been hard at work building the plinth the studio will stand on, and are now in the process of insulating it. It’s been a steep learning curve: understanding things like types of screws needed for maximum structural support, the hygroscopicity of natural insulation, or how to use a mitre saw (and much more). Lots of research and decision-making at every turn, which means it’s been a slower than expected process. Especially as our work is weekend weather dependent, and we live in England… But my capacity for patience has wonderfully expanded (Jeff has infinite patience — a great building partner to work with)!
